No deposit means no upfront deposit. You still need to budget for repayments, interest and the costs of running your car.

What is no deposit car finance?

No deposit car finance lets you spread the cost of a car without paying an initial deposit. You borrow more than you would if you put some money towards the purchase.

It can be available through hire purchase, known as HP, or personal contract purchase, known as PCP. Availability depends on the lender, the car and your circumstances.

No deposit does not mean nothing to pay before driving away. Insurance, vehicle tax, delivery costs or other charges may still need paying. Check exactly what is due and when.

Can I get car finance without a deposit?

Some lenders offer finance without a deposit. Each lender sets its own rules and checks whether the repayments look affordable. Having a deposit is only one part of that decision.

Your income, regular spending, existing debts and credit record can all matter. The car's age, value and mileage may also affect the options available.

There is no promise that you will qualify. If the repayments would leave little room for unexpected bills, consider a smaller borrowing amount or waiting while you save.

How does no deposit HP or PCP work?

With HP, monthly repayments usually cover the car's price and interest over the agreement. Ownership passes after all required payments, including any purchase fee.

With PCP, part of the car's value is left until the end as an optional final payment. You must pay this, plus any required fee, if you want to own the car.

You can usually return a PCP car at the agreed end instead. Mileage limits and condition rules apply. Read how HP and PCP differ before choosing.

What are the pros and cons of no deposit finance?

The main benefit is keeping savings available for other needs. That could help with insurance or repairs, provided the ongoing repayments still fit your budget.

  • You do not need to save an initial deposit.
  • You borrow more for the same car than you would with a deposit.
  • Monthly repayments will usually be higher if the other terms stay the same.
  • Borrowing more usually means paying more interest on the same terms.
  • You may face a larger gap between the car's value and the finance settlement figure.

A longer term may reduce the monthly repayment, but it can increase the total interest. Look at the full amount payable before deciding.

What is negative equity?

Negative equity means the car is worth less than the amount needed to settle its finance. It can happen when the car loses value faster than you repay the borrowing.

Starting without a deposit can make this gap more likely, particularly early in the agreement. Depreciation, mileage, condition and the finance terms all affect it.

If you want to sell or change the car, ask the lender for a settlement figure first. You cannot simply sell an HP or PCP car while the finance company still owns it.

Adding a shortfall to another agreement increases your borrowing. Check what that would mean for the next car's repayments and total cost.

How much can I afford without a deposit?

Start with what remains after rent or mortgage payments, household bills, food and existing credit commitments. Keep room for costs that do not arrive every month.

Add insurance, vehicle tax, fuel or charging, servicing, MOT tests, tyres and repairs. A car that fits the finance budget can still cost too much to run.

What could my payments be?

Enter the car price, deposit, term and APR from your quote.

Nothing is stored or sent.

A calculator gives an estimate. It is not a quote or a lending decision. The actual terms depend on the lender and your circumstances.

Will applying affect my credit record?

A lender will usually check your credit record when assessing an application. A soft search and a hard search work differently.

A soft search does not affect your credit score. A hard search leaves a record that other lenders can see and may affect your score.

Ask which search will happen before proceeding. Do not assume that requesting a quote or completing a form always uses the same type of search.

What happens if I miss payments?

The car may be taken back if you do not keep up repayments. Missed payments can also affect your credit record and make future borrowing harder.

Contact the lender as soon as you think a payment will be difficult. Explain what has changed and ask what support is available.

For HP and PCP covered by the Consumer Credit Act 1974, paying a third of the total amount payable gives extra protection against repossession without a court order.

Court rules differ in Scotland, where a court order is generally needed. Get help promptly if repossession is threatened. StepChange offers free debt help.

Can I end no deposit car finance early?

You can ask the lender for an early settlement figure. This shows what you need to pay to clear the agreement, including any interest reduction due.

For HP and PCP covered by voluntary termination rights, you can end the agreement and return the car. You may need to top up payments to half the total amount payable.

You may also owe arrears or costs for failing to take reasonable care of the car. On PCP, the halfway figure includes the optional final payment.

Having no deposit can mean reaching that halfway figure later. Read the guide to ending car finance early before choosing how to leave.

What other rights do I have?

Most car finance credit agreements give you 14 days to withdraw. Check when that period starts. Withdrawing from credit does not automatically cancel the car purchase.

You normally need to repay the credit used, plus interest for the days you had it, within 30 days of giving notice.

With HP or PCP, the finance company is responsible for the car's quality under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. Raise faults with it promptly.

Complain to the finance company first. If the complaint remains unresolved, you may be able to use the Financial Ombudsman Service. Eligibility and time limits apply.

How do I request a no deposit quote?

Request a quote by filling in the form. A car finance specialist then gets in touch, explains the options and gives any quote and any advice.

The lender decides any application and provides any finance. Check the repayments, total amount payable and end terms before signing.
